Umm Omara was a renowned warrior and women’s rights advocate and fought alongside the Prophet Muhammad in many of the great battles including the battle of Uhud and the Treaty of Hudaibiyah. She was of one of the first advocates for the rights of Muslim women and is reported to have asked the Prophet Muhammad why the revelations of the Qur’an only addressed men.[1] Soon after this exchange, this verse was revealed addressing both men and women:

“Verily, the Muslims men and women, the believers men and women, the men and the women who are obedient, the men and women who are truthful, the men and the women who are patient, the men and the women who are humble, the men and the women who give Sadaqat, the men and the women who observe fast, the men and the women who guard their chastity and the men and the women who remember Allah much with their hearts and tongues, Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward.” (Qur'an 33:35)
