Dr. Ingrid Mattson is a Muslim leader and Islamic studies scholar well known for her contributions towards contemporary scholarship on women's rights in Islam. She served as the president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) for two terms; in 2006 and 2008, making her both the first woman, and the first convert to Islam, to take on this role.
Mattson is currently the Chair in Islamic Studies at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada and is highly involved in inter-faith dialogue efforts - her book, 'The Story of The Qur'an: its history and place in Muslim Life' was chosen in 2012 by the National Endowment for the Humanities for inclusion in its “Bridging Cultures” program.[1] |
Dr. Mattson has used her scholarly work to practical effect, working for example with a Muslim social service agency, Peaceful Families, to discourage and advocate against domestic violence and discrimination against women on the basis that these are forbidden in the Qur'an. [2]
She has advocated for a greater public role for Muslim women as religious leaders and when she founded the first graduate program for Muslim chaplains in the US, she ensured it was also open to women.[3] Mattson has argued that governments should not have the right to enforce or ban the Islamic headscarf.[4] |
